Hace 51 años, o sea medio siglo atrás, Hollywood nos entregaba uno de sus filmes que hicieron historia a nivel mundial: BULLITT. Película policial de acción que tenía como interprete principal, nada menos que a STEVE MCQUEEN. Además se sumaban dos estrellas mecánicas que en las difíciles y empinadas calles de San Francisco, desarrollaron lo que se consideró la mejor persecución de automóviles de todos los tiempos. A partir de allí, escenas similares fueron parte de las películas de acción y con la llegada de la era digital, sin grandes riesgos, todo se hizo posible. Esa escena de 10 minutos de duración estaba acompañada con música del argentino Lalo Schiffrin y para realizarla, se utilizaron cuatro automóviles. Dos Ford Mustang 390 GT 2+2 Flashback conducidos por el Teniente BULLITT y dos Dodge Charger 440 Magnum R/T ocupado por dos peligrosos asesinos. De ellos, habría sobrevivido solo uno de los MUSTANG. Como dijimos, se trata de un Flashback 390 GT con motor V8 6.4 L de 335 HP a 4600 rpm de potencia y 579 Nm (59 kgm) a 3200 rpm de torque. Tiene caja manual de 4 marchas, acelera de 0 a 100 km/h en 7,8 s, de 0 a 400 m en 15,5 s y alcanza una velocidad máxima de 113 mph (182 km/h). Se le había hecho algunas modificaciones en motor, suspensión más reforzada y colocado algún soporte para cámaras de filmación. Ford en el 2018, al cumplirse los 50 años de la película lanzó al mercado el MUSTANG BULLITT, con detalles de alta calidad, en color Dark Highland Green, idéntico al del 390 GT del film. Vino equipado con motor V8 5.0 L atmosférico, aunque con el sistema de admisión es del deportivo Shelby GT350 y un dispositivo de escape activo, que permite variar el sonido del motor. Esta máquina entrega una potencia de 475 HP (15 más que el GT estándar) y un torque de 570 Nm (58 kgm); combinándose con caja de velocidades manual de 7 marchas.
Pero volviendo a nuestro viejo Mustang del siglo pasado, terminada la filmación los estudios Warner Brothers reparó el automóvil y lo vendió a un detective que vivía en la costa este. Años después, en 1974, a través de un aviso clasificado lo revendió por 6.000 dólares, como Mustang “Bullett” a ROBERT KIERNAN pasando a ser su automóvil familiar. Si bien no creyó que se tratara del utilizado en la película, en 1977 el propio STEVE MCQUEEN intentó comprárselo. Sabiendo entonces lo que tenía lo utilizó un par de años más y lo guardó conservándolo hasta su fallecimiento en el año 2014. Heredado por su hijo SEAN KIERMAN este luego de varios años decidió venderlo. Así podemos ver que la MECUM AUCTION, (1) la casa más grande del mundo en subastas de automóviles de colección lo rematará como el lote destacado en enero de 2020 en Kissimmee, Florida. Los entendidos pronostican una operación de DOS o más millones de dólares, considerando que es el MUSTANG más emblemático de la historia. What a car and what a movie. It was the pioneer of car chases. The car chase was out of sequence moving in seconds from one end of the city to another. Places they pass in the chase include Russian Hill, Bernal Heights, Marina Blvd near Crissy Fields, Potero Hill. John McLaren Park, and ends on Highway 1. It’s said that they wanted to perform the chase across the Golden Gate Bridge but couldn’t get permission. There are several interactive maps on the web showing the actual routes the chase followed.

I’d like to point out the 2019 Ford Mustang Bullitt is technically an homage to the 1968 Steve McQueen film “Bullitt,” and specifically the Mustang in that movie that participated in one of the most famous car chases in film history. Its green paint, 1960s-style black wheels, cue ball shifter and various Bullitt badging would be the tell-tale sign of this tie-in. However, the Mustang Bullitt is so much more than that. Even if you had no idea there was a movie, the Bullitt would be the coolest, best-driving and generally most appealing 2019 Mustang.

this is a HUGE opportunity to do screenings in major cities and just make it a car mecca/extravaganza! When BULLIT came out, I was deep in the car scene but imports weren’t hugely prominent. Now with Toyotas, Diamonds, etc/// Ugh! in that year were few, but mixed in with Mustang guys, Camaro, old Starions, you name it. When that movie release, the parking lots at theaters were like car shows of the biggest mix of enthusiasts you’ve ever seen. People hated the traffic and chaos, but it still caused a movement and a huge resurgence in the scene.

From what I read, they did find the mustang in Mexico and are restoring it now. There were two mustangs from what I read, this worn out looking one was the “hero” car. It did not do the jumps, it did however do some of the chasing.

I think it was the 70’s when he was the highest paid actor in Hollywood, so Steve had money. Factoid, Steve gave big $$$$ to charities for disadvantaged youth. I don’t mean what you read about in his biographies. You see Steve had a very quite personality, a real wall flower, so he never gets credit for the big $$$$ he gave to children’s charities (again not what you read about in bios) so I’m saying it here. This info comes from Dutch who knew.
Anyway, going back to the mustang, s both of the original two movie cars survived. The other one that was used in the film was found down in Mexico. That’s pretty cool. Don’t think the two chargers used in the movie survived but at least the fastbacks did.

The, that’s right the, most iconic movie car of all time being driven for years in obscurity in the country, the back roads of america, pulling daily duty for a farm family that takes care of horses (yes I know it’s ironic). What a car and what a movie. It was the pioneer of car chases. The car chase was out of sequence moving in seconds from one end of the city to another. Places they pass in the chase include Russian Hill, Bernal Heights, Marina Blvd near Crissy Fields, Potero Hill. John McLaren Park, and ends on Highway 1. It’s said that they wanted to perform the chase across the Golden Gate Bridge but couldn’t get permission. There are several interactive maps on the web showing the actual routes the chase followed.

I’d like to point out the 2019 Ford Mustang Bullitt is technically an homage to the 1968 Steve McQueen film “Bullitt,” and specifically the Mustang in that movie that participated in one of the most famous car chases in film history. Its green paint, 1960s-style black wheels, cue ball shifter and various Bullitt badging would be the tell-tale sign of this tie-in. However, the Mustang Bullitt is so much more than that. this is a HUGE opportunity to do screenings in major cities and just make it a car mecca/extravaganza! When BULLIT came out, I was deep in the car scene but imports weren’t hugely prominent. Now with Toyotas, Diamonds, etc/// Ugh! in that year were few, but mixed in with Mustang guys, Camaro, old Starions, you name it. When that movie release, the parking lots at theaters were like car shows of the biggest mix of enthusiasts you’ve ever seen. People hated the traffic and chaos, but it still caused a movement and a huge resurgence in the scene.

From what I read, they did find the mustang in Mexico and are restoring it now. There were two mustangs from what I read, this worn out looking one was the “hero” car. It did not do the jumps, it did however do some of the chasing.

Never saw a weapon on him, doesn’t mean he didn’t have one, but I did not see one. His aunt talked about Steve’s troubled childhood. I think it was the 70’s when he was the highest paid actor in Hollywood, so Steve had money. Factoid, Steve gave big $$$$ to charities for disadvantaged youth. I don’t mean what you read about in his biographies. You see Steve had a very quite personality, a real wall flower, so he never gets credit for the big $$$$ he gave to children’s charities (again not what you read about in bios) so I’m saying it here. This info comes from Dutch who knew.
Anyway, going back to the mustang, s both of the original two movie cars survived. The other one that was used in the film was found down in Mexico. That’s pretty cool. Don’t think the two chargers used in the movie survived but at least the fastbacks did.

There is something blissfully poetic about this whole thing. The, that’s right the, most iconic movie car of all time being driven for years in obscurity in the country, the back roads of america, pulling daily duty for a farm family that takes care of horses (yes I know it’s ironic). It’s literally the stuff of dreams.
Hay algo maravillosamente poético en todo esto.
