She is remembered for her work to advance the rights of both African Americans and women. Before her death, Bethune penned “My Last Will and Testament,” which served as a reflection on her own life and legacy in addition to addressing a few estate matters. Among her list of spiritual bequests, she wrote “I leave you a thirst for education. Knowledge is the prime need of the hour.” Bethune closed with ‘If I have a legacy to leave my people, it is my philosophy of living and serving.”

I am extremely proud to be a product of Mary McLeod Bethune educational experience. I remember as a freshman there in our freshman into class we had to read over how the university was established and the history of her.
She must have had strength and courage that most of us can only dream about. I read about some of her work in the Roosevelt administration. She was the first African American woman to be appointed to a position in the federal government, and she did extraordinary work on behalf of young people during the Depression.

Dr. Bethune’s name and legacy should be known by everyone.
I am so proud of the works of this woman. Without her pioneering works and countless others, I probably wouldnt be where I am today without her!
