Gary Brooker, líder de los rockeros progresivos británicos Procol Harum, murió en su casa después de una batalla contra el cáncer el 19 de febrero, según un comunicado de la banda. Tenía 76 años.
“La voz y el piano de Gary fueron la única constante definitoria de los cincuenta años de carrera internacional de conciertos de Procol. Sin payasadas en el escenario u otros trucos, invariablemente fue el músico más visible en el espectáculo”, dice el comunicado.
Brooker, nacido el 29 de mayo de 1945 en Londres, fundó Procol Harum en 1966 con el compositor Keith Reid después de la disolución de su primera banda, The Paramounts, que disfrutó de un éxito fugaz con la canción de 1965, “Poison Ivy”. El sencillo debut de Procol Harum, el aturdido y empapado de órgano “A White Shade of Pale”, vendió más de 10 millones de copias en todo el mundo y encabezó las listas de éxitos en el Reino Unido.

El legado de “A Whiter Shade of Pale” se extendió hasta el puesto 57 en la lista de 2004 de la revista Rolling Stone de las “500 mejores canciones de todos los tiempos”. En 2018, el Salón de la Fama del Rock and Roll incluyó la balada, que ha generado más de 1000 versiones, en su categoría de Sencillos. Procol Harum llenó las listas con otro material: “Homburg” en 1967, “A Salty Dog” en 1969 y “Conquistador”, lanzado como sencillo en 1972, pero el emotivo “Whiter Shade” siguió siendo la firma de la banda.

Brooker, quien fue nombrado miembro de la Orden del Imperio Británico por la Reina en 2003 en reconocimiento a su labor benéfica, también fue reconocido por sus colaboraciones con artistas como Eric Clapton, Paul McCartney, Ringo Starr y George Harrison, quienes tocaron en uno de los cuatro álbumes en solitario de Brooker.
“Celebridades musicales de la abultada libreta de direcciones de Gary acudían en masa para tocar en sus propias presentaciones estelares, siempre recaudando dinero para obras de caridad”, comenta la banda en el comunicado, y agrega que el último proyecto de caridad de Brooker recaudó más de un millón de libras para el Royal Marsden Hospital. con un concierto en el O2 Arena de Londres a principios de 2020.
A Brooker le sobrevive su esposa Franky, con quien se casó en 1968. La familia anunció que se llevará a cabo un funeral privado y una celebración conmemorativa en una fecha posterior.

Man, I don’t know how much more of this I can take. This one really hits hard. I was fortunate enough to meet him back in the late 90s when he did Ringo’s All-Star Band and he was the nicest guy. I was very young s very impressive too I often feel like Procol Harum is my own secret band because I don’t really personally know anyone else that mentions them. Anyway, what a band and what a loss to music. RIP Gary Brooker.
Gary and Procol Harum has always held a special place in my heart, in fact became a touchstone for me. Saw them in NYC at the Palladium, where a giant cake was wheeled onstage for some sort of anniversary for WSOP. Shine On Brightly was their peak disc for me, and after Grand Hotel their output became uninspired “product” to my ears. Still listen to them regularly, stunned when I came across the headline. Guess it’s just a matter of time. Did In Held Twas In I really have the secret?? But they were so young!! 🙂
I saw Procul Harum many times over the years here in the UK. One of my favourite vocal performance ever is A Salty Dog and the first time I saw them live they performed that classic, during the short intro I thought this vocal won,t be anywhere near as good as the record. I was wrong, it was better.

So sad. When I was in 5th grade, we were assigned to write a poem. I lifted a few lines from Magdalena My Regal Zonophone….thinking no one could ever possibly know this. Well, when I handed it in my teacher confronted me..” did you really write this?”….I guess the line, “caprice your bugle blew away the cobwebs from my ears” was a dead giveaway…:-) Later on in my life I had the pleasure of meeting Mr. Brooker and Bill Wyman backstage at the “Blues On The Farm” Festival in Chichester England…June of 2000. I was in a band that shared the bill that day with Bill Wyman’s Rhythm Kings. Great memories…..

Mr. Brooker was a most welcome addition to the Concert for George in 2002. His vocals on Old Brown Shoe were excellent! RIP.
