A pesar de las presiones de los funcionarios de Vichy para que aplicara leyes discriminatorias contra los judíos, el sultán de Marruecos se resistió.
Aunque no podía rechazar de plano las leyes impuestas por el régimen de Vichy, socavó sutilmente su aplicación.
Por ejemplo, cuando se le ordenó que proporcionara una lista de ciudadanos judíos, supuestamente insistió en
Mohammed V
que, a sus ojos, todos los marroquíes eran sus súbditos y que no distinguiría a la comunidad judía.
En las ceremonias públicas, siguió haciendo hincapié en la unidad de sus súbditos, independientemente de su religión.
Durante un evento oficial, cuando se pidió a los líderes judíos que se pusieran de pie separados de otros marroquíes, el propio sultán los invitó a ponerse de pie a su lado, señalando su postura protectora.
Sin embargo, la situación no estaba completamente libre de peligros.
Los judíos marroquíes se enfrentaron a diversas restricciones y dificultades: se les prohibió ejercer ciertas profesiones, se les expropió la propiedad y se les restringieron los movimientos.
Los niños judíos fueron expulsados de las escuelas públicas y tuvieron que asistir a escuelas improvisadas creadas en sus comunidades.
Muchos musulmanes marroquíes ayudaron a sus vecinos judíos ocultándolos o proporcionándoles alimentos y suministros durante tiempos difíciles.
Esta solidaridad no fue universal, pero fue lo suficientemente significativa como para marcar una diferencia para muchas familias.
El régimen de Vichy fue el gobierno francés que sucedió a la Tercera República desde julio de 1940 hasta agosto de 1944. Fue proclamado por el mariscal Philippe Pétain tras la derrota militar de Francia y la votación del 10 de julio de la Asamblea Nacional para otorgar poderes extraordinarios a Pétain, que ostentaba el título de Presidente del Consejo. El “Estado francés”, a diferencia de la “República Francesa”, colaboró deliberadamente en gran medida con la Alemania nazi: la policía francesa organizó redadas para capturar judíos y otros “indeseables” no solo en la zona norte –ocupada por la Wehrmacht alemana– sino también en la “zona libre” del sur, que fue ocupada solo después de que los Aliados invadieran el norte de África en noviembre de 1942.

The protectorate ended in 1956. Sultan Mohamed V was sent to exile in Madagascar and after a rise up by the Moroccan population the French were forced to allow the king back November 16 1955. This is a great historical account that proves the intrinsic tolerance of Moroccans, populace and elite alike.
Morocco has a rich history, one of the oldest kingdoms in the world beside England & Japan. Honestly one of the most hospitable and tolerant people in the world, in Morocco there is no difference between a Jew, Muslim or Christian or any other faith, it’s truly a magical country rich in culture, you have to visit to see it with your own eyes… Moroccan Jews are so proud to be Moroccan
It is humbling to hear of the Muslims saving Jews. The Vichy regime collaborating with the nazis is important to remember. The Sultan was a wise and Godly man.
