La Revolución estadounidense fue más bien una revuelta colonial, mientras que la Revolución francesa fue un acontecimiento histórico mundial que pretendía redefinir por completo la estructura social y política existente en Francia.
Lo único verdaderamente “revolucionario” en el ejemplo estadounidense sería el establecimiento de una forma republicana de gobierno después de la independencia, algo que no se había intentado desde la época de la antigua Grecia.
Ya no tenían rey, pero Jorge III nunca fue más que una figura decorativa distante. Los hombres blancos que poseían propiedades permanecieron en la cima de la estructura social y los esclavos siguieron siendo esclavos. En la medida en que fue una revolución, fue una revolución muy conservadora y estrictamente controlada.
Pero la Revolución francesa resultó en el derrocamiento completo del orden existente, que luego fue reemplazado por algo completamente nuevo. Fue una convulsión radical que pasó por varias fases distintas, cada una de las cuales estuvo marcada por una violencia extrema.
Y después de diez años de caos sangriento, el país estaba listo para un hombre literal a caballo que pudiera restaurar la estabilidad y repeler a los invasores extranjeros que habían estado tratando de poner en cuarentena el virus de la revolución.
