Ha dicho públicamente que si pierde las elecciones de mitad de mandato, “me van a destituir”. Y las encuestas sugieren firmemente que la Cámara de Representantes cambiará de mayoría (el Senado es mucho más difícil de predecir).
Eso le da ventaja a Irán. Los altos precios del gas causados por el cierre del estrecho también les dan ventaja. Y a medida que nos acercamos a noviembre, Trump se desespera más.
Ya los oigo decir: “¿Entonces Trump cederá para salvarse?”. Si pudiera conseguir el trato adecuado, sin duda lo haría. Pero no puede firmar un acuerdo que haga que los votantes digan: «Un momento: perdimos vidas, gastamos más de 100 mil millones de dólares, enfadamos a nuestros aliados en la OTAN y en el Golfo, ¿y lo único que conseguimos fue la reapertura del estrecho que ya estaba abierto antes de la guerra?».
Eso podría cambiar la opinión de suficientes votantes como para que incluso el Senado esté en juego. Y en ese caso, no solo el juicio político, sino también la condena y la destitución se convierten en una posibilidad real.
