Miguel Grau (1834–1879) fue almirante de la Marina de Guerra del Perú y comandante del monitor Huáscar durante la Guerra del Pacífico contra Chile.
Es considerado uno de los grandes héroes nacionales peruanos no solamente por su valentía militar, sino también por su humanidad y respeto hacia el enemigo.
Durante el combate naval de Iquique, el 21 de mayo de 1879, Grau logró hundir la corbeta chilena Esmeralda. Sin embargo, ordenó rescatar a los marinos enemigos que habían quedado en el agua. Posteriormente envió una carta a la viuda del comandante chileno Arturo Prat, fallecido durante el combate, y le hizo llegar personalmente las pertenencias de su esposo.
Ese gesto contribuyó enormemente a construir su reputación como un militar que, incluso en la guerra, mantenía códigos de honor.
Meses después, el 8 de octubre de 1879, el Huáscar fue enfrentado por una fuerza naval chilena superior en el combate de Angamos. Grau murió durante la batalla.
Su muerte convirtió a Grau en una figura central de la identidad peruana. Su nombre está presente en calles, plazas, escuelas, instituciones y unidades navales de todo el país.
Lo extraordinario de Grau es que su grandeza no depende únicamente de haber combatido por el Perú. Es recordado también porque demostró que el valor militar puede coexistir con la compasión y el respeto por el adversario.
