Investigadores del Real Jardín Botánico de Kew, en Reino Unido, han bautizado ‘Uvariopsis dicaprio’ a una especie de árbol recientemente descubierta en Camerún en homenaje al actor americano Leonardo DiCaprio, en particular por su contribución a la protección del bosque africano de Ebo, una de las selvas tropicales más extensas del mundo, frente a la amenaza de la tala.

El ‘Uvariopsis dicaprio’ se describe como un pequeño árbol tropical de hoja perenne con flores amarillas alrededor del tronco. Crece sólo en este lugar del país centroafricano y su estado actual es de peligro crítico de extinción. Se trata de la primera planta nueva nombrada oficialmente por los científicos de Kew en 2022.

En 2020, DiCaprio lanzó una campaña en sus redes sociales para proteger esta selva tropical, después de que el Gobierno de Camerún concediera un permiso para la tala del bosque con vistas a la producción de madera. Finalmente, el Gobierno camerunés revocó esta decisión.

Esta reserva alberga ejemplares únicos de flora y de fauna, como gorilas, chimpancés y elefantes, muchos de ellos en peligro de extinción.

I live in Apopka (close by) I came through the storm in good shape. Didn’t loose power (that’s a miracle) I have a shit ton to do picking branches
