Well, I’m on my fifties but if I recall up to around 1990 (when I was a teen) many well informed, educated, and well intentioned people did not mean to be hurtful but the fear was sincere in so much that people were just concerned about the well being of all people. Not just themselves. All sorts of ideas were passed around at that time in history and two of the big concerns was just that people were not only unsure who to believe but also the idea and concept that the disease and virus might not only mutate into something worse but could somehow become air born. Or just the fact that those who were concerned might be accidentally misinformed themselves. So, yeah, people were misinformed but there was legitimacy in cause for concern because while H.I.V. had been around for a decade it was still not only considered new but also confident understanding with it was hard to grasp and or to be sure about because again people in general were not sure what to think. So while there might have been some degree or degrees of hate or even resentment it was more to do with concern of everyone’s well being and the fear of it becoming worse than it already was at that point. Especially when you compound all of this information with figure pointing in terms of people placing not only blame but what kind of blame on other people who were supposedly contracting this evil disease because of their own misjudgments.
@Rachel There was a great deal of fear and ignorance. It doesn’t excuse the actions of those who caused harm needlessly to others. It was possible to understand HIV/AIDS and how it was transmitted even at this time. More could have been done by the federal government, but it wasn’t a priority for the Reagan administration. Many social conservatives welcomed AIDS. They saw it as a solution to a problem and not an issue for “good” people.

Sad these kids didn’t get to see they 30s and 40s except one
The hatred of those people was directed squarely at the three boys. The fire burned hottest in the boys’ room, under a poster that read: “I have AIDS, Please hug me. I can’t make you sick”

I remember this incident . My GF was born in Arcadia. My In-laws always tell me stories about Arcadia’s past. My GF is glad she wasn’t born to see some of the things that happened. They remember this story as if it was yesterday. Is a damn shame how they were treated.
