Leland Stanford, Sr. first approached Harvard University to establish an endowment to build a new wing of the University in his son’s name, and was turned down by that Board of Trustees, not the Dean.

I grew up next to Stanford University, on the ground is a giant mausoleum with two giant Egyptian/Griffin statue things “guarding” it. We used to climb on them as kids. When we were told it was a burial tomb with dead people inside, it grossed us out.

During the mid to late 19th century, California had a lot of powerful families and they pretty much knew each other. Leland and Jane were obsessed with supporting the college. Losing Leland Jr was devastating to both of them. In a way, they wanted their boy to be a lasting legacy through the college. Its one of those twists of fate that the boy’s death benefited so many people through education.
