El 17 de diciembre de 1968, Barbara Mackle, de 20 años, se encontraba en un hotel de Decatur, Georgia, con su madre, Jane, debido a un brote de gripe que afectaba a muchos estudiantes de la Universidad de Emory. Jane había recogido a Barbara para ayudarla a recuperarse de la enfermedad.
Más tarde esa noche, Gary Stephen Krist llamó a la puerta de su hotel y afirmó falsamente que el novio de Barbara había tenido un accidente automovilístico. Una vez que se abrió la puerta, Krist y su cómplice, Ruth Eisemann-Schier, sometieron por la fuerza a las mujeres, colocándoles la cara con un trapo empapado en cloroformo.
Después de atar y amordazar a Jane, los agresores secuestraron a Barbara y la transportaron a una zona apartada del condado de Gwinnett. Allí habían preparado una trinchera previamente cavada que contenía una caja reforzada con fibra de vidrio equipada con una bomba de aire, una lámpara y provisiones con sedantes. Bárbara estaba confinada dentro de la caja.
Exigiendo un rescate de 500.000 dólares al rico padre promotor inmobiliario de Barbara, Gary y Ruth orquestaron una entrega. Sin embargo, sus planes se frustraron cuando los policías que pasaban los alarmaron, lo que provocó una fuga apresurada a pie.
Una búsqueda posterior de su automóvil abandonado reveló una fotografía de Bárbara dentro de la caja con un cartel que decía “Secuestrado”. Se organizó una segunda entrega de rescate y Ruth, sintiéndose presionada, se puso en contacto con la policía y le proporcionó indicaciones para llegar a la ubicación de Barbara. Después de soportar tres días atrapada bajo tierra, Bárbara fue rescatada con éxito.
Gary y Ruth fueron detenidos poco después. Ruth ganó notoriedad como la primera mujer en aparecer en la lista de los diez más buscados del FBI. Ella obtuvo la libertad condicional después de cuatro años, mientras que Gary recibió la libertad condicional después de cumplir diez años por sus crímenes.

AN FBI Agent who worked on this case came to speak to my class about the importance of support people in the FBI . I took his word for it and in 1975, I applied. I started working in WDC in February of 1976, transferred back to my home state in 1977 and retired from the FBI in 2016. 40+ years of service with the greatest law enforcement agency in the world. It’s not the FBI people you read about in the news that made the agency work so well, it is the people behind the scene that do the hard work.
Sandra Houston felicitaciones por la importante labor que por tantos años realizó en la mejor agencia policial del mundo. Como policía de Argentina en 1990 trabajé un año con la DEA, y posteriormente la Embajada de EEUU me envió becado a su país un mes a conocer diferentes organismos de seguridad en 5 estados de este a oeste. Así tuve oportunidad de visitar la sede central, la academia de ustedes, y algunas delegaciones de otros estados. Una experiencia enriquecedora e inolvidable.
