La reunión se produce en un contexto en el que hay indicios de que Pionyang planea celebrar un desfile militar con motivo del 75.° aniversario de la fundación del Ejército Popular de Corea, que podría servir de ocasión para exhibir sus novedosas armas nucleares.
De acuerdo con Lee Sung-jun, portavoz del Estado Mayor Conjunto de Corea del Sur, el Ejército surcoreano detectó el “aumento significativo de personal y vehículos” en áreas donde podrían realizarse los ensayos para el desfile, pero se negó a compartir información acerca de la fecha en la que se llevaría a cabo el evento.
