Nikolaus (conocido como Klaus) Barbie fue el jefe de la Gestapo en la ciudad de Lyon entre 1942 y 1944 durante la ocupación nazi de Francia. Fue responsable de la deportación de cientos de judíos y de la eliminación física de numerosos partisanos, entre ellos Jean Moulin, líder de la Resistencia francesa. Dio la orden de matar a seiscientos niños judíos, acorralados en un internado de Issieu, y que acabaron, junto a cientos de comunistas, resistentes y judíos lioneses, en los campos de exterminio de Adolf Hitler.
Para todos, era “el verdugo de Lyon”. Por todos sus crímenes, fue condenado a muerte en ausencia dos veces, en 1952 y 1954, por un tribunal militar francés. Con la caída del nazismo acercándose, consciente de la victoria de los aliados, se puso a cubierto y quemó todos los archivos de la Gestapo en Lyon. Eliminó entonces a todos los posibles testigos de sus atrocidades y logró escapar, evitando los juicios de Núremberg. En 1947 trabajó para la inteligencia estadounidense como infiltrado entre los comunistas alemanes.
Luego desapareció para escapar de las autoridades francesas y alemanas. Reapareció en 1955 en Bolivia donde colaboró con los servicios secretos locales bajo el nombre de Klaus Altmann Hansen, pero fue reconocido y capturado el 19 de enero de 1983 gracias al trabajo de Serge Klarsfeld, un judío rumano naturalizado francés y su esposa Beate, hija de un militar alemán. Los Klarsfeld colaboraron con la justicia francesa y los servicios secretos para capturar al criminal nazi. El 4 de julio de 1987, la Corte del Tribunal de Lyon condenó a Klaus Barbie a cadena perpetua por crímenes contra la humanidad. En 1991 el “Verdugo de Lyon” murió de leucemia.

Barbie had escaped to Bolivia after the war where he lived like most Nazis, under Gov’t protection. What I did NOT know until I read Klaus Barbie and the International Fascist Connection was that he was under AMERICAN protection after the war. And that my friend pisses me off mightily. There is no way his cancerous death made up for the suffering he caused so many people and to have been allowed to go unpunished for so many years leaves a burning in my stomach that I can’t stand. IDK how anyone could justify making that decision.
