El presidente electo de EE.UU., Donald Trump, no descarta el uso de la fuerza militar para apoderarse de Groenlandia o el canal de Panamá, afirmó este martes durante una rueda de prensa.
La respuesta del mandatario se produjo luego de la pregunta de un periodista sobre si “podía asegurar” que, en su propósito de tomar control de la vía interoceánica o la isla, no consideraría una acción militar.
“No te lo puedo asegurar, estás hablando de Panamá y Groenlandia. No, no puedo asegurarte nada de ninguno de esos dos, pero puedo decir esto: los necesitamos para la seguridad económica”, expresó Trump.
Si bien el presidente no proporcionó detalles sobre sus planes, dejó en claro su imposibilidad de comprometerse con no recurrir a la coerción económica o militar para lograr sus objetivos. “No voy a comprometerme con eso”, recalcó.
En repetidas ocasiones, Trump ha dejado en claro sus ambiciones de apropiarse de la isla más grande del mundo, nación constituyente de Dinamarca, a la que considera una “absoluta necesidad” para la seguridad estadounidense. “La gente ni siquiera sabe si Dinamarca tiene derecho legal, pero, si lo sabe, debería renunciar a ella, porque la necesitamos para la seguridad nacional”, comentó al respecto este martes.
Entretanto, en lo que se refiere al canal de Panamá, que estuvo bajo control de Washington entre 1914 y 1999, Trump considera que puede ser recuperado, subrayando que fue construido para las Fuerzas Armadas estadounidense. “Es vital para nuestro país. Lo opera China. ¡China! Y le dimos el canal de Panamá a Panamá, no se lo dimos a China; y ellos han abusado de él, han abusado de ese regalo”, aseveró en su discurso de hoy.
“Por cierto, nunca debió hacerse [la entrega del canal]. En mi opinión, la donación del canal de Panamá fue la razón por la que Jimmy Carter perdió las elecciones […]. Fue un gran error. Darle el canal de Panamá a Panamá fue un gran error. Perdimos 38.000 personas, nos costó el equivalente a un billón de dólares, tal vez más que eso […]. Entregarlo fue algo horrible”, concluyó al respecto.

Trump didn’t think this trough. Economic coercion against Denmark won’t work! Denmark is a member of the European Union and any sanctions against Denmark will be treated as against the whole EU and that won’t end well for the America.
Trumps behavior is only isolating the United-States further. He is angering his country’s closest allies in a time when you absolutely NEED allies. As a proud Canadian, this move makes zero sense. Canada became a country because of British Loyalists who left the US in search of independence. We are also a culturally diverse nation with native Canadian populations, (French speaking Quebec), etc… We have completely different values in terms of collectivism here in Canada (free health care for all) rather than individualism (privatized health care) in the US for example. Canada tolerates government in their life, whereas the US wants government out of their lives. The United-States and Canada should continue to work as close allies on the global stage. Any talk about creating one country is nonsense and quite frankly insulting to a population who is PROUD to be Canadian.
Militarily, Trump can do absolutely nothing. Canada is part of NATO. If he militarily attacks Greenland (Constituent Nation of the Kingdom of Denmark) he attacks Denmark. If he militarily attacks Canada and Greenland he is attacking NATO members and NATO Article 5 is activated. «Article 5 of the Washington Treaty of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) establishes that an armed attack against one or more of its members in Europe or North America is considered an attack against all:» «In the event that a country invokes this article, the other members must take the measures they consider necessary to restore security in the region.»
