Desde 1991, cuando fue diagnosticado con párkinson, la carrera de Michael J. Fox se ha vuelto muy cuesta arriba, aunque el actor de Regreso al futuro ha insistido en seguir adelante con ella. Ahora, sin embargo, admite que se enfrenta a uno de sus mayores desafíos: la enfermedad neurológica con la que lleva décadas luchando ha afectado a su capacidad para memorizar sus papeles.

“Mi memoria a corto plazo está acabada”, confiesa Fox. “Siempre se me había dado muy bien memorizar mis líneas. Y he tenido momentos bastante extremos con los dos últimos trabajos que hice, que eran papeles con mucho texto. Me costaron muchísimo”, reconoce.

Tras su intervención en The Good Wife como estrella invitada, Michael J. Fox ha trabajado en dos series (Sucesor designado y The Good Fight, de nuevo junto a Christine Baranski) además de en el largometraje Mr. Lockhart, sin contar varias intervenciones como actor de voz.

A fin de conservar su dicción, señala, ha practicado usado trabalenguas. Por si fuera poco, además, un tumor benigno en su espina dorsal le obligó a someterse a una operación en 2018, tras la cual necesitó cuatro meses de rehabilitación para caminar de nuevo.

Ahora, Fox presenta un nuevo volumen de memorias titulado No Time Like the Future. “Me he quedado con esto”, explica. “Ya no toco bien la guitarra, tampoco puedo dibujar, nunca he sido buen bailarín y actuar me resulta más difícil que nunca. Así que solo me queda escribir, algo que por suerte me gusta”.

Pese a todo, el actor asegura no haber perdido la esperanza en el porvenir. “El optimismo se sostiene cuando sigues recurriendo a la gratitud, y lo que viene después es la aceptación. Aceptas de que estas cosas han ocurrido, y las aceptas por lo que son. Eso no quiere decir que no puedas proponerte cambiar. No quiere decir que tengas que aceptarlo como un castigo”.

      Not in his lifetime. My Mother has dementia for 21 yrs. she’s v frail now almost 90. There is no cure. Hope there will be in future. The only thing we can hope for is we don’t succumb to it. But that’s frightening thought. It’s already trillion dollars problem for many countries in the world grappling with thousands of dementia patients. Medical costs fr care is so expensive not to mention the medicine.
