Mientras sus colegas republicanos en el Capitolio finalmente publicaron su proyecto de ley secreto sobre la reforma sanitaria el jueves por la mañana, el senador de Vermont (Bernie Sanders) se encontraba al otro lado de la ciudad, pronunciando un discurso contundente sobre la necesidad de “preservar la democracia estadounidense y oponerse a la actual deriva hacia el autoritarismo que, en mi opinión, representa el presidente Trump”.

En su intervención en la Fundación Carnegie para la Paz Internacional, un centro de estudios de política exterior en Washington D.C., Sanders enumeró las maneras en que Trump está socavando instituciones estadounidenses vitales: intentando deslegitimar el sistema electoral mintiendo sobre millones de votos ilegales, debilitando la independencia judicial atacando a los “supuestos jueces” y participando en “ataques sin precedentes y despiadados contra los medios de comunicación”. Argumentó que las acusaciones de Trump sobre “noticias falsas” son un intento de condicionar a los estadounidenses para que desconfíen de toda la información de la prensa. Recordó a su audiencia lo que el representante republicano Lamar Smith dijo a principios de este año: “Es mejor obtener las noticias directamente del presidente. De hecho, podría ser la única manera de obtener la verdad sin adornos”.
Sanders señaló la ironía: «No conozco a ningún político —y ciertamente a ningún presidente en la historia de nuestro país— que haya dicho tantas mentiras escandalosas y descaradas como Donald Trump». Pero gracias al poder del partidismo, gran parte del país cree en un líder con tendencias autoritarias. «Todas estas tendencias son aún más preocupantes si se tiene en cuenta la constante admiración de Trump por los líderes autoritarios de todo el mundo», dijo Sanders. «Me resulta extraño que tengamos un presidente que parece sentirse más cómodo con autócratas y líderes autoritarios que con los líderes de naciones democráticas. ¿Cómo es posible que tengamos un presidente que ataca a todo el mundo —demócratas, republicanos, empresarios, reinas de belleza, periodistas, estrellas de cine— y que, al mismo tiempo, no tenga más que elogios para el presidente ruso Vladímir Putin y otros líderes autoritarios?».
Si la política estadounidense fuera racional, todos los republicanos del Capitolio expresarían la misma preocupación. Casi ninguno lo hace, porque necesitan su firma para privar a millones de estadounidenses pobres de seguro médico y otorgar una enorme rebaja de impuestos a los ricos.
