    1. More important than Anglican converts are the Eastern Rite Catholic clergy who are not converts, but are permitted to marry in the same way that Eastern Orthodox priests are.

The history recounted suggests that concerns about inherited wealth, power, and position should probably be added to the list of rationales. This rationale has little relevance today–though other rationales might.

I think this “man-made” rule is nuts. How can you say to a non-catholic married minister of another church, “If you join us and wish to become a priest , it’s okay to keep your wife.” BUT if your are a catholic you cannot become a priest and be married.
The church punishes it’s own for being catholic. How stupid.
I am a catholic and I truly believe that one day common sense will prevail and a progressive Pope will bring the church to it’s senses.

  13. God Made Man, in doing so he made him to reproduce, he made it a biological drive, to defy this drive is to go against the laws of God and nature ! This is why Celibacy is wrong and is destroying the Catholic church ! A man made law of Celibacy, look at what it has done to the church and will continue to do !
Also another mistake is not to allow divorced people to participate in the sacraments. Some one needs to run the statistics up the flagpole to find out what that has cost the Catholic Church in money and attendance !

  14. Jesus consorted with Mary Magdalene, and He taught that any sin could be forgiven except “blasphemy against the Holy Spirit,” whatever that means. So, He was not celibate and He forgave sexuality in others. So this article is not helpful, stating the obverse.

“It is better to marry than to burn” reveals a hell of a lot about the puritanical attitudes of ancient religion purveyors.
Basically, they are saying that because it is inevitable for a man to sin because of masturbation, due to our intense natural (yet veboten!) sexual urges, it is better to marry and pop your rocks into a supposedly dispensable woman and have a child that you will be responsible for the rest of your life (according to those that era’s fcked up pseudo-mores), than to spill your seed “into your shirt.” (Ummmm, tube sock or Kleenex, in modern times.)
    Sh

      1. Actually, he is referring to the words of Luther – quoted in the article above: .”Nature never lets up,” Luther warned, “we are all driven to the secret sin. To say it crudely but honestly, if it doesn’t go into a woman, it goes into your shirt.” Read the history, it makes you smart(er).

Never mind that the N.T. rules for those overseeing the flock include the injunction of being “the husband of one wife,” not to mention the analogy of “if they can’t properly govern their kids, how are they to govern the congregation” (paraphrased slightly). Ya can’t have kids w/o marriage (according to Scripture, that is), so there are 2 practices that are essential to being a shepherd of the flock.

That is why priests are not allowed to be marriage counselors. There are elderly people in the church with years of experience who handle marital issues. I think we shouldn’t be too quick to judge. besides there are a lot of protestants today with very young pastors who are unmarried and yet preach and advice they flocks on marriage….And the same word says if a part of you prevents you from entering heaven, cut if off. it is better to enter into heaven with one eye than into hell with both. Marriage works for some just as much as it doesn’t for others. We both know a lot of people men and women in marriages today wish they never made that decision or say those vows to each other including clergies who are divorcing and remarrying in the light of all this “Marriage and Celibacy” discussion. i don’t think anyone is forced with a gun to their heads to be priests, pastors or to get married. These decisions are made solely by the individuals and must be ready to accept responsibility whenever it sways. Human are naturally glory hungry but never want to admit to flaws. You must have a reason for every decision you make and know it comes with responsibilities. If someone was able to stick to his celibacy vows, why can you and if someone was able to make his marriage work, why can’t you? Will power, endurance and above all the love for God comes to play here. Some married people irrespective of what their partners give in marriage will still cheat including clergies. Now what i mean to say is simple, “some humans” are never content with anything. They will still misbehave either ways. Some married clergies are still cheating even with a woman available to them 27/7. Let us deal with issues from the root and not the branches.

Are you implicitly suggesting castrating some priests and gauging out their lustful eyes for heaven sake? How do you explain the fact that Jesus mentioned the right hand and not the left? Some who join the Catholic priesthood are wrongly taught that is the only way to serve God.(I Cor. 7 ; I Tim.4:3) Others join the clergy to satisfy their homosexual urges under the cloaks and the protection of the abominable church of Satan pedophilia for centuries.

Good point. It is also important that priests be addicted to heroin or cocaine and are alcoholics because without that experience they could not relate..

O, The book “Apostolic Origins of Priestly Celibacy” produces proof that this woman is off by more than ten centuries when it comes to Continent/celibate priests.

As early as the fourth century Pope Siricius was issuing his decretals demanding priests return to the ancient Apostolic Praxis of continence/celibacy

  17. Celibacy May have made sense in another time and place but I think it is time to change. Having a church that is led by a bunch of celibate men who have never known the struggles and hardships of marriage is a disservice to the parishioners who the are supposed to be leading. Besides, it does go against our human nature, a nature that we were given by God at creation. For God Himself has declared “it is not good for the man to be alone, therefore I shall create woman for him”.
On the sixth day of creation God COMANDED the man and the woman “Go forth and multiple.” Why would the church think it is wise to contradict human nature and the commandment of God? “You hold to the traditions of man, rather than the commandments of God”

Are you implicitly accusing Jesus of encouraging celibacy within the Catholic Church? Why did celibacy become official only in the 12 Century? Jesus was tempted in all things, according to the Bible, yet He committed no sin. Can you say the same things for these pedophiles and homosexuals and others struggling day in and day out with their natural sexual urges?
