I guess slavery would have been gone, or at least greatly endangered, by the mid 1900s anyway. It’s a whole lot less expensive to maintain a tractor than to feed, clothe, and shelter enough slaves to do the same job by hand. Mechanization would have killed agricultural slavery off even if it were legal to this day. There were other types of slaves besides the ones working fields, of course, but it was the ones in the fields that provided the economic incentive to keep the whole mess around. I like to think that without the economic incentive to fight against it common decency would eventually finish the entire institution off (and yes, I’m quite aware of the overly optimistic nature of such a thought).
If the South wins the Civil War then what really matters is which border states they would have won in the peace. Missouri, Kentucky, West Virginia, and Maryland’s fate would have made a huge difference. Depending on when the South won Kentucky definitely could have joined the South.
What if the United States of America dissolved and each of the 50 states became it’s own country, you would have 50 presidents, each with it’s own capitol, currency, constitution, it’s own Flag, passports and visas needed to travel or work outside your state country, each with it’s own military force, it’s own political system, justice system, police force, it would make a interesting scenario discussion.
