I read a biography about Dickey Chapelle. She was gutsy but pressed her luck one too many times. My father was a veteran of the Pacific war in a New Guinea hell-hole called Buna. So he was well-acquainted with the futile nature of jungle warfare. In addition to jungle rot, malaria, waist-deep mud, jungle vegetation that regrew within 36 hours after soldiers of the 32nd (Red Arrow) division had cut a swath through Dad & his buddies faced an enemy who had smokeless, flashless ammunition that soldiers of the 32nd Division lacked. Maybe Dickey should’ve spent time with the Army’s 32nd Div. but that was earlier in the war before she went overseas. Soldiers of the 32nd Div. were the unsung heroes of the Pacific war. While there’s footage of the Marines making landfall unopposed on the shores of Guadalcanal Japanese opposition commenced immediately, on the shores of New Guinea costing the lives of G.I.’s then & later. My father commented on the footage of those Marines landing on Guadalcanal stating you won’t see us (the 32nd Division) making landfall, on film, because “…the cameraman would’ve been killed!”

I read a biography about Dickey Chapelle. She was gutsy but pressed her luck one too many times. She was a cold warrior, circa early 1960’s, & believed in the precepts set fourth in JFK’s inaugural address which included intervening in the internal conflict n Vietnam. I read a subsequent saber-rattling speech by JFK was “music to her ears.”
But of course she was a war photographer so “what the hell” I’ll go to Vietnam with my beloved Marines. Though she became a critic of how that war was conducted she didn’t or maybe wouldn’t recognize that our government, in my father’s words, “had no damn business being over there.” Eventually that’s the conclusion President Kennedy came to. My father was a veteran of the Pacific war in a New Guinea hell-hole called Buna. So he was well-acquainted with the futile nature of jungle warfare. In addition to jungle rot, malaria, waist-deep mud, jungle vegetation that regrew within 36 hours after soldiers of the 32nd (Red Arrow) division had cut a swath through Dad & his buddies faced an enemy who had smokeless, flashless ammunition that soldiers of the 32nd Division lacked. Maybe Dickey should’ve spent time with the Army’s 32nd Div. but that was earlier in the war before she went overseas. Soldiers of the 32nd Div. were the unsung heroes of the Pacific war. While there’s footage of the Marines making landfall unopposed on the shores of Guadalcanal Japanese opposition commenced immediately, on the shores of New Guinea costing the lives of G.I.’s then & later. My father commented on the footage of those Marines landing on Guadalcanal stating you won’t see us (the 32nd Division) making landfall, on film, because “…the cameraman would’ve been killed!”
