La reclusa transgénero Amber McLaughlin, acusada de matar a su exnovia en 2003, fue ejecutada este martes en Misuri (EE.UU.) por inyección letal.

McLaughlin, de 49 años, fue sentenciada a pena de muerte por asesinar a puñaladas a su pareja. Previamente, el gobernador de Missouri, Mike Parson, rechazó una solicitud de indulto. En el pedido de clemencia, la reclusa citó problemas de salud mental y una infancia traumática.

En el momento de la administración de la inyección letal, McLaughlin estaba acompañada de un asesor espiritual con quien habló en voz baja, para luego respirar profundo y cerrar los ojos. Fue declarada muerta pocos minutos después de recibir la inyección. En una declaración final, la reclusa pidió perdón por el crimen y dijo ser una “persona amorosa y cariñosa”.

Antes de la ejecución, un grupo de activistas realizó una manifestación en los alrededores de la Corte Suprema de Misuri, pidiendo el indulto para Amber, a quien describieron como “un ser humano gentil”.

Desde que se restableció la pena de muerte en EE.UU. a mediados de la década de 1970, un total de 1.558 personas han sido ejecutadas. De ellas, solo 17 fueron mujeres y hasta ahora no se había registrado casos de ejecución de un recluso abiertamente transgénero. De esta forma, Amber McLaughlin es la primera persona transgénero en ser ejecutada en Estados Unidos. 

El 5 de junio de 2006, McLaughlin fue declarada culpable de tres cargos: asesinato en primer grado, violación forzada y acción criminal armada contra una exnovia. Mientras estaba en prisión, el atacante hizo una transición de un hombre llamado Scott a una mujer llamada Amber.

    I think it should be unanimous but at the same time. To kill someone in the commission of kidnapping is extremely serious and aggravating. I can’t imagine what the victim went through leading up to her death!
