Rudolf Hametovich Nureyev nació el 17 de marzo 1938, en Irkutsk, Russia, Unióm Soviética y se convirtió en una estrella del ballet de su país en 1958 cuando, con apenas 20 años, se convirtió en uno de los solistas destacados del Kirov Opera Ballet. El bailarín se negó y se arrojó a los brazos de la seguridad del aeropuerto, gritando: “¡Protégeme!” Los funcionarios de seguridad detuvieron a Nureyev, por lo que solicitó asilo político.
