El 31 de octubre de 1950, Earl Lloyd, de 21 años, se convierte en el primer afroamericano en jugar un partido de baloncesto de la NBA cuando entra a la cancha en el primer partido de temporada de los Washington Capitols.

Lloyd creció en Jim Crow Virginia y fue al estado de West Virginia, donde fue la estrella del equipo de baloncesto de campeonato de la escuela. No sabía que había sido seleccionado por la NBA hasta que se encontró con un amigo en el campus que le dijo que había escuchado un rumor de que se mudaría a Washington. Resultó que los Capitolios lo habían elegido en la novena ronda del draft. Otros dos jugadores negros se unieron a la NBA esa temporada: los Celtics seleccionaron a Chuck Cooper en la segunda ronda y los New York Knicks contrataron a Nat “Sweetwater” Clifton de los Harlem Globetrotters, pero los Knicks y los Celts no comenzaron sus temporadas hasta noviembre. Como resultado, Lloyd se convirtió en un pionero coincidente: el primer jugador negro en debutar en la NBA.

Unirse a un equipo compuesto exclusivamente por blancos era intimidante, recordó Lloyd, pero sus compañeros de equipo, la mayoría de los cuales habían jugado en equipos universitarios integrados, le dieron la bienvenida de inmediato. Algunos fanáticos, sin embargo, fueron menos amables.
