Hora: aproximadamente 7:34 de la mañana, hora de Colombia.
Epicentro: cerca de San José del Palmar, departamento del Chocó, en el occidente del país.
Profundidad: aproximadamente 100–120 km, según las diferentes estimaciones iniciales.
Zonas afectadas: Chocó, Valle del Cauca, Risaralda, Antioquia y otras regiones.
También fue sentido: en Ecuador y Panamá.
El terremoto produjo derrumbes y daños importantes en edificios, especialmente en ciudades como Cali, Pereira, Quibdó y Manizales. Los informes disponibles indican al menos 111 fallecidos y 87 heridos, aunque las cifras pueden cambiar mientras continúan las tareas de rescate.
Uno de los aspectos más llamativos es que, pese a que el epicentro se encontraba a bastante profundidad, el movimiento produjo daños severos en una extensa zona. Las autoridades colombianas han informado de viviendas afectadas, edificios colapsados y personas que podrían permanecer atrapadas bajo los escombros.
El gobierno colombiano declaró el desastre nacional y movilizó equipos de emergencia y rescate. También se han producido inspecciones de infraestructura, incluyendo aeropuertos y hospitales afectados.

Es importante destacar que las primeras cifras después de un terremoto suelen ser provisionales. En zonas rurales del Chocó existen dificultades de comunicación y acceso, por lo que la magnitud real de los daños y el número de víctimas pueden tardar en conocerse.
Además, después de un terremoto de esta magnitud pueden producirse réplicas. Las autoridades deben evaluar edificios dañados antes de permitir que las personas regresen a ellos.
