El 30 de junio del año 2000, dejaba de existir Vittorio Gassman, uno de los mejores actores de la historia italiana. Gassman comenzó a actuar en los años de la Segunda Guerra Mundial y continuó hasta los noventa: comenzó como un actor dramático, haciéndose muy apreciado por Bitter Rice, pero con I Soliti ignoti demostró que también podía interpretar papeles de un tipo completamente diferente, y continuó hacerlos, entre muchos otros, en películas como Il sorpasso y La grande guerra, en la que protagonizó junto a Alberto Sordi. Fue bastante difícil iafinarlo en otros roles después de verlo interpretar al fugitivo Walter Granata en Bitter Rice o después de verlo en el papel de Anatole Kuragin en la Guerra y la paz del famoso director King Vidor, pero gracias a Mario Monicelli, Gassman también abrió un gran camino hacia la comedia italiana, interpretando al boxeador (pobre) que se convirtió en ladrón (igualmente pobre) Peppe el Pantera, tartamudo.
En el cine, Gassman probablemente hizo lo mejor entre los años cincuenta y sesenta. Ya en 1965, la revista New York Times escribió sobre él: “Probablemente no haya otro actor en Europa capaz de representar tan bien a un hombre que pierde toda su dignidad y al mismo tiempo se aferre a las migajas de respeto. Actúa con sensibilidad y tensión internas; a pesar de sus rasgos clásicos, su rostro es infinitamente móvil y expresivo”.
Pero también tuvo papeles notables más adelante: en Profumo di donna (Perfume de Mujer, dirigido por Risi) y en C’eravano tanto amati (Nos habiamos amado tanto, por Ettore Scola) y en el extranjero, actuando por ejemplo en La vida es una novela de Alain Resnais.
Gassman continuó actuando hasta finales de la década de 1990, y con excelentes resultados: en Italia para La Cena, dirigida por Scola, y en Estados Unidos en Sleepers, dirigida por Barry Levinson. En esta película, con su personaje King Benny, ensombreció a actores como Robert De Niro, Dustin Hoffman y Brad Pitt, quienes tenían papeles mayores.
A pesar de todo lo que hizo en teatro y cine, el apodo más conocido de Gassman proviene de la televisión y el programa que protagonizó a fines de la década de 1950: El Matador (que más tarde se convirtió en una película).

Gassman was the best in War and Peace. Even tho the movie was very Hollywood, the “Italian Olivier” pulled off. A real talent.
