There is no question that homeopathy, if it works at all, works either by the placebo effect or through spontaneous remission (i.e., many illnesses are self-limited regardless of treatment or the lack thereof). Of course, placebo effects can be powerful and can result in dramatic symptom relief. Some people feel that this alone can justify the use of homeopathy. The problems are several, however. First, placebos are not always effective. Second, there may well be a much more effective treatment available that would cure the patient more reliably and more quickly. Third, the patient’s illness may get worse while he or she is receiving the placebo. Fourth, there is the cost factor, which means, how much do you want to pay for a placebo, especially when it’s marketed, without supporting research, as being effective?

Sympathetic magic is an ancient idea that seems to occur in some form in almost every culture. When medieval Christians rejected the idea as a pagan superstition, herbalists reinvented as a sign from God (plants with shapes similar to parts of the body were showing a sign that they could heal that part). When people ceased to believe that, it was reinvented as homoeopathy.
The interesting part about these impressive arguments is that ‘homeopathy’ can be search-and-replaced by ‘acupuncture’ and they remain equally valid. I think I’ll stay with real medicine for the foreseeable future. I like my treatments to be useful, not only for the provider, but also for myself.
Nobody in her/his/its right mind is arguing that the pharmaceutical industry is entirely honest, but every time I hear that, I cringe. It should be obvious to anyone who can read and who has elementary school level education that the pharmaceutical industry is far more regulated than the snake oil industry. My point is, and has always been, that there should be a level playing field. X makes a health claim? X backs it up with relevant, verifiable and solid evidence. X can do that? X is allowed to go ahead. X makes a health claim? X backs it up with relevant, verifiable and solid evidence. X cannot do that? X is not allowed to go ahead. X goes ahead anyway? X is a criminal and must face the music. It does not matter who is deceptive. Deception should be a criminal offense for anyone. We are not talking about little white lies that make society run smooth. We are talking about lies that kill people. In my book, regardless of what the legal term is, it is murder. There may not be the intention to kill, but there is the intention to deceive in flagrant disregard of peoples’ health and life. That to me, is premeditated murder. Whether or not the pharma industry is made up of saints or crooks or both is irrelevant. Just because Bernie Madoff is a criminal does not mean your local wealth manager should be allowed to get away with his own deceptions.
… Once in high school I dated this boy, who’s mom gave me this odd “homeopathic medicine” called “oscillococcinum” or something like that when i had the flu. I remember it tasting exactly like sugar. I did some research on its own ingredients and sure enough, it was sugar. And supposedly mixed with a diluted drop of water that had duck liver in it but diluted to the point to where it had not one molecule of duck liver left, and this was supposed to cure the flu. But when I tried explaining this to the mom and my boyfriend I was treated with anger. That was in 2008 or so. Off course the relationship was over that same night. I remember watching James Randi and Reading quack watch articles on that type of “medicine”. Good times…

Any homeopathic nostrum made according to the principles of homeopathy contains nothing but water (or sometimes alcohol) or the same on perhaps a bit of sugar. Any beneficial effect is no better than placebo. If it made you feel worse it perhaps contained something other than water and was not truly homeopathic. The only difference between homeopathic products is the label. They all contain the same thing: water. There is no “art” to choosing one beyond convincing the user that what he is given is just what he needs.
Not looking for trouble but as someone who grew up believing in homeopathy and now realizes it doesn’t work i can for sure say that connection with the homeopath is what got me to believe it works. also, my parents were a big factor. and that they are antivax is also so true
My dad, as a kid, ate the whole stock of Homeopathy at a friend my grandparents were visiting. Had these been real medication and not sugar, he would have died.
I love the manner in which you approached this topic. It would be so easy to say something like “Homeopathy is dumb and doesn’t work”, yet you looked at it with pure facts
I always try to understand both sides. Its fine if Homeopathy works for you. But on a scientific level I have to say you are wrong. I searched through alot of studies around Homepathy and after this, its simply a fact that science agrees on one thing: Homeopathy does not have an effect beyond placebo.

The interesting part about these impressive arguments is that ‘homeopathy’ can be search-and-replaced by ‘acupuncture’ and they remain equally valid. I think I’ll stay with real medicine for the foreseeable future. I like my treatments to be useful, not only for the provider, but also for myself.
most people with a slight bit of sense do! even the royal family is rushed to a [conventional] hospital as soon as they are really ill.
True that.
I agreed with you @arizonasnake this is BS

I mean, if the placebo sugar pills help you, that’s cool… Let’s not try to justify that bullshit

Parece La Volpe
