From how I understand it, although selfishness and selflessness are important elements in play, it’s not the “core” of this law, it’s more about if you offend the most sacred thing in the Universe which is life, or if you respect and honor it, whether it is your life or other creature’s life. I.e. if you let someone disrespect you, it’s not only them creating bad karma, it’s also you, although you MAY have been raised thinking that you’re being selfless, that you are doing a good sacrifice.
Another thing I wanted to add is that there is a very important difference between the creation of good karma or bad karma. In creating good karma, intentions create deeper causes/effects than thoughts and actions, while in creating bad karma, actions create deeper causes/effects than words or thoughts.
Last thing, it also depends on the “goodness” (harmony) of the life which is offended or honored. If you hit (offend) a wall your hand hurts, if you hit the air it doesn’t. If you honor someone who honors life through thoughts, words and actions, you create extremely good karma.

  3. in 2019 I had a severe mental and emotional breakdown which I think was the culmination of 40+ years of being on the receiving end of other people’s extreme self-centred behaviour- I have 100% belief in reincarnation and over the years some “information” has gradually filtered through to me about why (maybe) they behaved in the ways that they did. This is in a way like the “chicken and the egg” question though- why would I deserve to be driven to suffer severe depression in this lifetime, because it has left me in a very difficult situation (I also have Crohn’s Disease)- I do try to help other people who have problems; I love cats (I have 2 and a homeless one who won’t come indoors yet) but my depression has got worse in the last few months, again because of other people’s self-centredness (from my perception). Much of the time I have an inner conflict going on about “why is this happening to me” against “I should try to look at the bigger picture of what exactly is going on here”. Very very difficult, and I suffer many bouts of being in a mental state which I can only describe as hell (although not all the time).

  4. Karma is how I see narcissists. Their unconscious selfishness causes them to behave in evil ways. While in the beginning they love to bully you little by little their soul dies. They eventually feel dead inside. Like digging your own grave. They become the living dead. That is karma.

  5. The impression i always had of karma was that it was a consequence of allowing urself to form certain brain pathways, and once brain pathways are laid down, it is inherently difficult to change them without deliberately mindful actions.
So if u choose to steal from others once, u will likely do it again, and will begin to do it to friends and family, who will distance themselves from you. So u lose ur friends and family, and eventually the only ppl who will put up with you are other theives, who will steal from you (coz they’re theives) so u begin to lose your own stuff as well.
And if you want this crap to stop, u have to stop the brain pathways you allow your brain to continue treading and lay down new brain pathways, and that can be difficult, which is another consequence of laying down those pathways to start with 😀
    It’s just thought in action…

As Krishna says in the gita: ” action pertaining to the development of the of the material bodies of the living entities is called karma.” 8:3 He also says, ” material nature consist of three modes goodness, passion, and ignorance when the eternal living entity comes in contact with nature, O mighty – armed Arjuna, he becomes conditioned by these modes.” also, ” The result of pious action is pure and is said to be in the mode of goodness. But action done in the mode of passion results in misery, and action performed in the mode of ignorance results in foolishness.” Karma is the derived result that comes from your being influenced by these modes. As krishna says, ” Those situated in the mode of goodness gradually go upward to the higher planets; those in the mode of passion live on the earthly planets; and those in the abominable mode of ignorance go down to the hellish worlds.” our actions, beliefs, goals of life, are influenced by these modes and the end result of the action is just the fate that is incorporated in these modes.

  7. The internal punishment is only true for those of us who have a conscience. But I have met people who have no conscience who lie and commit crimes with no regrets whatsoever
