La Paradoja de Fermi es una contradicción entre la alta probabilidad de que exista inteligencia extraterrestre y la falta de evidencia de su existencia. La paradoja plantea la pregunta: ¿Por qué la Tierra aún no ha sido visitada o contactada por extraterrestres? La paradoja lleva el nombre del físico Enrico Fermi, quien hizo esta pregunta en 1950. Veamos la evidencia (no la “prueba”; sólo lo que vemos):
No hemos recibido, aparte de alguna que otra señal anómala, NADA del resto de la galaxia, ni más allá. Es totalmente silencioso.
Sin embargo, constantemente emitimos señales que, hasta la fecha, se han expandido hasta una esfera de aproximadamente 80 años luz de diámetro.
Desde hace sólo 80 años, en toda nuestra existencia, hemos estado transmitiendo al espacio.
Hemos sacado la cabeza por la puerta, en una noche oscura y sin luz, y no hemos visto nada.
Pero seguramente otras especies han hecho lo mismo: encendieron una antorcha y gritaron. Algo como eso. Pero no lo hemos detectado. ¿Porqué es eso?
Bueno, se podrían suponer un par de escenarios:
No hay nadie ahí.
Todos guardan silencio.
En el caso de 1, esto es preocupante. Muy preocupante por cierto. Si existimos, ¿seguramente también existen otros? Tal vez no. Quizás hayan encontrado un gran filtro.
Un gran filtro es un acontecimiento que acabará con una civilización. El impacto de un asteroide, una estrella que explota cerca, un agujero negro errante, una guerra nuclear, una plaga, una hambruna, una sustancia viscosa gris. Existe una lista enorme y no exhaustiva de posibles escenarios que podrían eliminar toda vida de un planeta. Y si pueden suceder allí, también pueden suceder aquí. Es posible que tengamos ante nosotros varios de estos filtros. Aterrador.
En el caso de 2, esto también es preocupante. La hipótesis del bosque oscuro. Todos guardan silencio, por elección propia. Deliberadamente no transmiten porque quieren mantener su existencia en secreto, para no ser el objetivo de un ataque relativista calculado.
Pero, en una nota más positiva, existen otras posibilidades:
Simplemente todavía no son capaces de realizar tales transmisiones. Esa vida aún no existe Están transmitiendo, pero esas transmisiones aún no nos han llegado. Están transmitiendo, pero no de una manera que podamos detectar o comprender. Debido a las enormes escalas involucradas y a la asombrosa falta de información que sufrimos, son tan probables como cualquier otra cosa.

An odd thing is that people ask if there’s life in space, without seeing the fact that we are that life. So that question is already answered through our very existence. And since we are here, there’s of course life elsewhere. I think the evolution has showed that where there’s a window of possibility for life open, there you can rest assure you’ll find life. The thing is that those windows open and close with the cykles the planet go through.
