Alcatraz cerró sus puertas en 1963 y los manifestantes nativos americanos las volvieron a abrir en 1969.

La Coalición de Nativos Americanos del Área de la Bahía de San Francisco había estado observando la Isla de Alcatraz desde que la famosa prisión flotante cerró sus puertas en 1963. Los Nativos Americanos del Área de la Bahía comenzaron a presionar para que la isla se remodelara como un centro cultural indio y una escuela a partir del día cerraron.

Cinco miembros de la tribu sioux desembarcaron en Alctratraz en marzo e intentaron apoderarse de ella legalmente en virtud de la ley del tratado de 1868 que permitía a los nativos americanos apropiarse de las tierras federales excedentes.

Todos los intentos fueron frustrados por los terratenientes capitalistas, lo que encendió la joven contracultura que emergía dentro de las comunidades nativas americanas.

En octubre de 1969, un incendio destruyó el Centro Indígena Americano de San Francisco, lo que inspiró a un grupo activista llamado “Indios de todas las tribus” a conspirar para adquirir la tierra no utilizada en Alcatraz.

El objetivo era crear un refugio y un museo del patrimonio cultural en la roca que anteriormente había sido tierra de los nativos americanos.

Bajo el manto de la noche, varios manifestantes viajaron a la isla el 9 de noviembre de 1969. Fueron encabezados por el famoso activista y estudiante del Mohawk College Richard Oakes. Fueron retirados de la isla al día siguiente, pero montaron un ataque mayor en las próximas semanas.

En la mañana del 20 de noviembre de 1969, 89 hombres, mujeres y niños viajaron en botes a la isla de Alcatraz y reclamaron la tierra para todas las tribus de América del Norte.
