A principios del siglo XX, comenz贸 el movimiento “Art Deco”. El movimiento en s铆 comenz贸 como una especie de revuelta contra el movimiento Art Nouveau que estaba ocurriendo en ese momento. Art Deco era elegante pero a煤n accesible, impresionante pero no demasiado ornamentado o excesivo.
Art Deco involucr贸 materiales como cromo y vidrio, maderas ex贸ticas, superficies lacadas y shagreen. Los muebles eran de naturaleza escult贸rica con superficies y l铆neas suaves y aerodin谩micas. Este estilo se asoci贸 con “El gran Gatsby”, ya que involucraba una gran cantidad de materiales met谩licos y patrones detallados.

Si bien al principio era un estilo global que incorporaba inspiraci贸n de todo el mundo, m谩s tarde se convirti贸 en un estilo m谩s minimalista que plant贸 las semillas del modernismo de mediados de siglo.
El movimiento Art Deco fue memorable y 煤nico, pero cuando la econom铆a se vio afectada durante la Gran Depresi贸n, el estilo se atenu贸. Hoy en d铆a, los anticuarios y coleccionistas siempre est谩n a la caza de piezas Art Deco originales de la d茅cada de 1920. Hoy en d铆a, valen mucho m谩s porque est谩n hechos de los materiales m谩s preciados de la 茅poca. Si bien el estilo se elimin贸 durante la Segunda Guerra Mundial, desde entonces ha resurgido, la mayor铆a de los estilos de dise帽o lo hacen.
El Palacio de Bellas Artes en la Ciudad de M茅xico tiene una de las combinaciones m谩s asombrosas de Art D茅co y Art Nouveau. Es precioso, especialmente el tel贸n del teatro principal hecho de vidrieras.
My favorite building in NYC still remains The Chrysler Building. Though not as tall as some of the newer “skyscrapers,” the overall aesthetic of The Chrysler Building is far-more classical and unique than other taller structures within the city.
Art deco is kinda like modernism, only you look up to appreciate the streamlined but still decorative beauty of the building instead of wondering if a fall from that height would get you out of this soulless hell.
A lot of the design was based on speed and movement, inspired by planes, trains and automobiles that had started to evolve at that time period. Thats why household objects like toasters and furniture at that time had an aerodynamic streamlined look.
First time I heard about Art Deco was when Egon mentioned it in Ghostbusters. 馃槈
To me Art Deco is architecture was how to make modern architecture while not neglecting beauty. To me Art Deco is everything that Brutalism did away with.
the most interesting thing is the comparison between art deco and brutalism. Both embodies progress and modernity. But one embodies luxury, vibrance, freedom, extravagance. While the other embodies the opposite. functionality, authority, equality, and simplicity. Two battling global ideologies with two battling architecture style.
