Hay tres cosas que los antiguos esclavos tuvieron que superar después de la esclavitud: falta de educación, falta de recursos económicos y falta de oportunidades en una sociedad que hacía todo lo posible para que fracasaran. Podemos remontarnos al menos a 1870 en la historia de una familia. Esa familia eran aparceros. Esa familia era mi familia. No había forma de salir adelante allí. Algunos lo hicieron. Mi abuela se casó con una familia acomodada. La familia de mi abuelo materno tenía tierras. Sin embargo, fueron saboteados varias veces, lo que los hizo retroceder en cada ocasión.
Las leyes y la desigualdad de la sociedad los mantuvieron pobres durante la generación de mi madre. La educación y las oportunidades de empleo eran, como mínimo, escasas. El movimiento por los derechos civiles de los años 60 y 70 brindó oportunidades a mi generación.
Mi generación tenía mejor educación que la anterior y mejores oportunidades de empleo. Los errores y fracasos de mi generación, o nuestros logros, han servido para la generación posterior. Sin embargo, la falta de comprensión financiera limitó la capacidad de mi generación para generar riqueza. Hicimos lo que sabíamos hacer. Los trabajos que conseguimos nos ayudaron a ascender, si nos mantuvimos enfocados, pero los errores financieros y en las decisiones de vida han mantenido a muchos en la pobreza. Si mi generación supo aprovechar las oportunidades disponibles, se educó y cometió errores mínimos en sus decisiones de vida, superó ligeramente la línea de pobreza, lo que yo llamo pobreza extrema.
A muchos de la generación posterior a la nuestra les va mejor que a muchos de la mía. Aunque varios de mi generación no son pobres, muchos sí lo son. Si la generación de mi hijo sigue centrada en la creación de riqueza, como parece ser, y les enseña finanzas, mi familia verá a muchos millonarios en las siguientes generaciones. Eso sí, si no sufrimos más reveses legislativos y sociales, lo cual ahora mismo no pinta bien. Y debemos tomar mejores decisiones de vida. Por cierto, mi hija es millonaria, al igual que algunos de sus primos. Este es un breve vistazo a una familia a lo largo de las generaciones. Cuanto peores sean nuestras decisiones de vida, más pobres seguiremos siendo. Tuve la suerte de formar parte de una familia que no era tan pobre hace unas generaciones, y mis decisiones de vida me han ayudado a mantenerme por encima del umbral de la pobreza, pero no a alcanzar la riqueza necesaria. Los errores son devastadores.
