Se puede argumentar que el budismo constituye la base de la influencia religiosa en la cultura china. Después de la introducción de la religión en el país, las imágenes de altruismo, que son comunes en la tradición budista, se convirtieron en temas dominantes del arte chino. Bajo la fuerte influencia del budismo, la cerámica y la literatura de la región comenzaron a reflejar creencias sobrenaturales además de la representación de visiones figurativas del entorno natural.

La fusión de las tradiciones confuciana, taoísta y budista, que fue especialmente evidente durante la dinastía Song, inspiró a los poetas chinos a crear innumerables poemas que reflejaban la armonía del orden político con la naturaleza. Dado que las pinturas se consideraban una extensión de la literatura y, a menudo, se consideraban poemas sin palabras, no sorprende que los pergaminos, los pergaminos colgantes y las hojas de los álbumes estuvieran imbuidos tanto de elementos compensatorios del Dao como de elementos tolerantes del budismo.

La música china fue moldeada tanto por las tradiciones políticas del confucianismo como por las tradiciones filosóficas del taoísmo. Con la introducción del budismo, su naturaleza monofónica se transformó por la influencia de la religión que se asoció con la energía radiante y la armonía interior. Los instrumentos musicales como la cítara y la pipa se utilizaron para crear música budista en China, lo que ayudó a expresar pensamientos y sentimientos religiosos.

    Me parece interesante cómo el texto relaciona religión y expresión artística sin tratarlas como ámbitos separados. La parte sobre la pintura como una especie de “poema sin palabras” me pareció especialmente curiosa, porque ayuda a entender por qué naturaleza, filosofía y literatura aparecen tan conectadas en el arte chino.
