Un sacerdote estadounidense fue declarado culpable la semana pasada por cinco cargos de tráfico sexual relacionados con tres víctimas, dos de las cuales eran menores de edad al momento de los delitos.

Según el Departamento de Justicia de EE.UU., Michael J. Zacharias, de 53 años, se desempeñaba como párroco en una iglesia católica de la localidad de Findlay, en el estado de Ohio, y fue arrestado en 2020. El hombre eligió a sus víctimas entre jóvenes que acudían a una escuela religiosa para recuperarse de adicciones a las drogas entre 1999 y 2020.

De acuerdo a los fiscales del caso, el religioso utilizó su posición en la Iglesia para ganarse la confianza de sus víctimas y se aprovechó de que eran adictas a las drogas para obligarlas a mantener relaciones sexuales. “Michael Zacharias usó su posición respetada para aprovecharse de jóvenes y adultos para su propia gratificación sexual”, explicó un agente del FBI.

Los testimonios de los damnificados dieron cuenta de la manipulación ejercida por el sacerdote, ya que los niños temían perder su figura paterna, así como su conexión con Dios y el acceso a las drogas, pues Zacharias les proporcionaba el dinero para comprarlas. 

Aún no se ha fijado una fecha para el veredicto de la sentencia, pero las autoridades informaron que podría enfrentar desde 15 años de prisión hasta cadena perpetua.

Por su parte, la Red de Sobrevivientes de los Abusados ​​por Sacerdotes de EE.UU. celebró la decisión de la Justicia e instó a la Iglesia a realizar mayores esfuerzos para detener los abusos sexuales dentro de la institución.

    It is the church which should be under scrutiny and investigation. It is responsible for providing access to minors to abusers in its employ. That is religion.

    Disgusting. Child victim witness protection programs are needed. Public news reports in France indicate that there were more than 200,000 child victims of priest abuse in France alone. I predict that child victims of priests cover-ups were also victimized in intimidation crimes in all 50 states, and that there were likely more than 1M child victims of priest child abuse cover-ups worldwide, including here in the United States. More child victims would come forward if witness protection programs were provided, and such programs include sufficient responses to ubiquitous ongoing intimidation. Logically, any reporting systems should include intimidation experts who are aware of cover-up modus operandi. Intimidation crimes against child victims are unique crimes, and I predict that prosecuting those intimidation crimes will lead to the discovery of previously unknown child victims. Any documented intimidation modus operandi could thus help to identify child victims.
