La Primera Guerra Mundial fue la primera guerra a gran escala e involucró a casi todas las naciones del mundo. Estados Unidos se unió a esta guerra en 1917 y para ayudar en los esfuerzos de guerra, envió unidades de combate aéreo a Europa. Uno de los héroes de la aviación estadounidense más famosos de la Primera Guerra Mundial es Eddie Rickenbacker.

Edward Vernon Rickenbacker nació en 1890 de padres inmigrantes suizos en Ohio. Soportó una infancia difícil ya que sus padres eran pobres y no podían mantener adecuadamente a sus ocho hijos. Hizo trabajos ocasionales hasta 1906, cuando se fue a trabajar para el piloto de carreras, Lee Frayer. Para 1912, Rickenbacker había establecido su propia reputación como un corredor as ganando popularidad en todo el país.

En 1917, Rickenbacker se unió al ejército e inmediatamente se dirigió al frente de batalla europeo. Su primer puesto en Francia fue como chofer de un general del ejército. Sin embargo, Rickenbacker expresó su deseo de servir en la fuerza aérea ya que estaba seguro de que podría usar sus agresivos talentos en las carreras de autos para convertirse en un eficiente piloto aliado en la guerra. Se le permitió asistir a un entrenamiento de vuelo y posteriormente se unió al 94.° Escuadrón Aero como piloto de combate. Demostró su destreza en el aire al lograr una serie de victorias.

El historiador Joseph Glover revela que debido a su aptitud aérea, Rickenbacker fue nombrado comandante de su unidad en septiembre de 1918 y ascendido a capitán al mes siguiente. Al final de la guerra, había acumulado 300 horas de combate, sobrevivido a 134 encuentros aéreos con aviones enemigos y derribado 26 aviones enemigos.

Después de la guerra, Rickenbacker regresó a los EE. UU. como un héroe nacional. Como civil, Rickenbacker expresó un gran deseo de desempeñar un papel en la industria de la aviación. Se unió a la industria y tuvo una larga y exitosa carrera en Eastern Air Transport. Este héroe de la aviación murió de neumonía el 23 de julio de 1973.

    I read in a biography, or maybe it was the History of Eastern Airlines, where Rickenbacker was prominently featured of course, that when he was an old retired guy he would daily go to a park near the ocean and feed the seagulls shrimp; he always appreciated that seagull that he felt was surely sent by God to save the downed crew.
