Carlos Fortino Sámano fue un capitán de primer rango del Ejército Constitucional al mando de Venustiano Carranza durante la Revolución Mexicana.
Fue acusado de robo con violencia contra una anciana, y luego de un juicio militar fue condenado a muerte en 1916.
Finalmente fue ejecutado por un pelotón de fusilamiento federal el 2 de marzo de 1917.
Antes de ser ejecutado, su última voluntad fue una copa de licor chile chipotle, que fue concedido por sus albaceas.
Se hizo conocido por la fotografía que tomó Agustín Víctor Casasola, quien lo captó de pie ante sus verdugos, sin vendas, tranquilo, fumando un cigarro.
Fue el tema del libro de Virginie Lalucq y Jean-Luc Nancy, Fortino Sámano (El desbordamiento del poema)
Tambien protagonista de la canción griega “Fortino Samano” (griego: Ο Φορτίνο Σαμάνο), que se encuentra en el álbum Samano (griego: Ο Σαμάνος) de Thanasis Papakonstantinou.
La elegancia de su ropa, rodilla ligeramente doblada como si descansara, manos en los bolsillos, podría hacer parecer como si estuviera haciendo una breve parada durante un paseo por el parque, desafiente, sonriente, sus ojos desconfiados, su cigarro fuertemente apretado ante el pelotón de fusilamiento.
En esas fuentes se afirma que se supone que era un rebelde y teniente de las fuerzas de Emiliano Zapata.
