El presidente de EE.UU., Joe Biden, condecora este sábado a 19 galardonados con la Medalla Presidencial de la Libertad, informó la Casa Blanca.

Según recalca el comunicado, la condecoración presidencial es “el más alto honor civil de la nación, otorgado a personas que han hecho contribuciones ejemplares a la prosperidad, los valores o la seguridad de Estados Unidos, la paz mundial u otros importantes esfuerzos sociales, públicos o privados”. El mandatario enfatizó que los galardonados son grandes líderes que contribuyeron al desarrollo no solo de la potencia norteamericana, sino del mundo en general.

Tanto la ex secretaria de Estado Hillary Clinton, como el filántropo multimillonario George Soros y el delantero argentino Lionel Messi figuran en la lista de los condecorados. Además, Biden otorgará la medalla al chef hispanoamericano José Andrés, cuya organización benéfica World Central Kitchen se ha convertido en una de las organizaciones de ayuda alimentaria más reconocidas del mundo.

Entre los galardonados también figuran Bono, líder de la legendaria banda de rock U2 y activista pionero contra el sida y la pobreza, así como los actores estadounidenses Michael J. Fox y Denzel Washington y dos personas del ámbito de la moda: el famoso diseñador Ralph Lauren y Anna Wintour, directora de contenidos de Condé Nast y directora editorial mundial de Vogue.

Cuatro medallas se concederán a título póstumo a Fannie Lou Hamer, activista del voto y de los derechos de la mujer; al ex fiscal general y senador Robert F. Kennedy; a George W. Romney, quien fuera gobernador de Michigan y secretario de Vivienda y Desarrollo Urbano y al ex secretario de Defensa Ash Carter. 

El propio mandatario estadounidense recibió la Medalla Presidencial de la Libertad en 2017, cuando ejercía como vicepresidente bajo la Administración de Barack Obama. Durante la ceremonia de entrega en la Casa Blanca, Biden se emocionó hasta las lágrimas.

    Bien por Messi, dada esa medalla por manos de un senil degenerado, no es mérito. Además, parece que se las otorgan entre ellos, como buenos zurdos.
