El cometa C/2023 A3 (Tsuchinshan-ATLAS), conocido como el ‘cometa del siglo’, ya es visible en el hemisferio sur, y a principios de octubre será visible también en el hemisferio norte.

Tsuchinshan-ATLAS, que proviene de la nube de Oort, una región del sistema solar que contiene millones de cometas, fue descubierto en enero de 2023 desde el Observatorio Tsuchinshan (Purple Mountain) en China y el telescopio del Sistema de Alerta de Impacto terrestre por asteroides (ATLAS) ubicado en Sudáfrica volvió a verlo unas semanas más tarde.

Los expertos han previsto que realizará su máximo acercamiento a la Tierra el 12 de octubre, a una distancia de aproximadamente 0,47 unidades astronómicas o cerca de 70,6 millones de kilómetros.

El 27 de septiembre y el 2 de octubre, el cometa alcanzará su perihelio, es decir, su punto más cercano al Sol. Según el fabricante de telescopios Celestron, en ese periodo C/2023 A3 tendrá una magnitud de brillo de 3,4 y podría ser visible a simple vista tanto en el hemisferio sur como en el norte. Dicha magnitud se mide en una escala en la que un número menor indica mayor brillo.

Mientras, el astronauta Don Pettit captó impresionantes imágenes del cometa desde la Estación Espacial Internacional.

Lo que lo hace particularmente espectacular es su larga y brillante cola formada por polvo y hielo, que se genera debido al calentamiento que sufre el cometa al pasar cerca del Sol.

Según la página StarWalk, este evento promete ser uno de los más impactantes del año y no volverá a acercarse tanto a la Tierra hasta dentro de unos 80.000 años.
