La utopía industrial de un rey del chocolate

En 1900, Milton Hershey vendió el exitoso negocio de caramelos que había fundado para convertirse en pionero de la producción masiva de chocolate con leche. Construyó un complejo fabril cerca de su ciudad natal, en la Pensilvania rural, en parte porque las granjas lecheras de la zona ofrecían acceso a un amplio suministro de leche. Debido a la ubicación remota de la fábrica, Hershey también construyó un pueblo para sus empleados, concebido como una utopía industrial que reflejara sus ideas progresistas. Con calles llamadas avenidas Chocolate y Cacao, el nuevo pueblo ofrecía una amplia variedad de viviendas modernas y asequibles que los trabajadores podían alquilar o comprar, un sistema de tranvías, escuelas públicas, clubes sociales, un parque de atracciones y un zoológico. En 1909, Hershey, sin hijos y con una educación formal limitada, fundó un internado local para niños huérfanos. Durante la Gran Depresión, lanzó una campaña de construcción que mantuvo a cientos de personas empleadas y resultó en la adición de un gran hotel, un estadio deportivo y otras estructuras públicas a su ciudad modelo.

A pesar del altruismo de Hershey y las numerosas comodidades de su comunidad con aroma a chocolate, la vida en “el lugar más dulce del mundo” no era del todo dulce. Hershey y sus ejecutivos se esforzaron por controlar el comportamiento de los empleados fuera de horario, y algunos trabajadores acusaron a los gerentes de mostrar favoritismo en materia de salarios y contratación. En 1937, los trabajadores de la fábrica de chocolate Hershey organizaron el primer sindicato de la compañía y se declararon en huelga. Aunque la huelga duró poco, empañó la imagen idílica de la comunidad. Sin embargo, tras la muerte del rey del chocolate en 1945, Hershey sobrevivió, a diferencia de otras ciudades productoras, y el chocolate se sigue elaborando allí hoy en día.
