Alrededor de 1200 a. C., la noble Matanazi, hermana del rey hitita Hattušili III, estaba comprometida en un matrimonio político con el jefe de un estado vasallo, pero no pudo quedar embarazada debido a su avanzada edad.

Para solucionar el problema, que ocasionaba considerables dificultades diplomáticas, el rey hitita decidió pedir ayuda a un poderoso aliado: el faraón Ramsés II. Los conocimientos médicos egipcios se consideraban superiores a los de los hititas y en aquella época las relaciones entre ambos países eran bastante buenas.

La extraña petición de ayuda sorprendió al faraón, quien explicó en una carta de respuesta que no había solución:

“Se dice que tu hermana Matanazi tiene 50 o incluso 60 años. Verás, una mujer de 50 o 60 años es demasiado vieja, y nadie puede preparar una medicina para hacerla procrear”.

A pesar de ello, Ramsés II no quiso arruinar las relaciones con los hititas y envió un médico y un mago para intentar un milagro.

Desgraciadamente, no sabemos el desenlace de la historia, aunque es razonable suponer que terminó sin nada hecho. Las palabras del faraón, sin embargo, constituyen una de las referencias más antiguas a la menopausia y sugieren que los egipcios ya tenían una idea bastante clara de ella.
