El mes pasado, la Patrulla Fronteriza de Estados Unidos detuvo a cientos de migrantes de países de África central, incluida la República del Congo, Angola y Camerún. Funcionarios federales en Texas informaron que más de 500 personas de países africanos fueron arrestadas en menos de una semana. Pero algunos sortean los controles.

Desde varios puntos de África hacia Ecuador y de allí, el peregrinaje hacia Estados Unidos, atrvesando Colombia, Panamá hasya llegar a la frobtera norte de México.

Muchos de los solicitantes de asilo africanos se han dirigido a ciudades como Portland, Maine, con grandes comunidades de inmigrantes africanos establecidos. Y así como la oleada de migrantes es abrumadora para los agentes fronterizos y el sistema de tribunales de inmigración de la nación, también lo es para los servicios sociales desde Portland hasta San Antonio, Texas.

En las ciudades fronterizas, los migrantes se amontonan en camionetas blancas una vez que cruzan la frontera. Los transportes dejan a las familias en una calle concurrida del centro, fuera del circuito de servicios para migrantes de la ciudad abandonandolos sin una guía sobre lo que tienen que hacer, lugares donde ir, trámites a realizar. Cuando los inmigrantes comenzaron a llegar desde lugares como los Congos y Angola, los trabajadores de la ciudad no tardaron mucho en darse cuenta de que necesitarían traductores.

“Aquí estamos trabajando conjuntamente con la ciudad en el centro de auxilios, ayudando a comprar boletos de autobús para que puedan reunirse con conocidos o familiares ya asentados en el país, y contactar a ciudadanos que hablan swahili o francés para ayudar con las necesidades lingüísticas”, dice Peter Stranges, quien trabaja para Catholic Charities (Caridades Católicas) en San Antonio.

Stranges suele ser más un tipo de escritorio: uno de los vicepresidentes de Catholic Charities que rara vez interactúa con los inmigrantes a los que sirve. Pero también habla francés, lo  cual facilita el diálogo con algunas familias africanas.

“Al llegar, muchas personas no saben ni siquiera en qué ciudad se encuentran o en que lugar sus contactos vieven. También tienen hambre, están cansadas y tienen sed”, dice Stranges. “Así que solo los estamos ayudando a comunicarse con familiares o amigos residentes que pueden ayudarlos en este nuevo y desconocido lugar llamado Estados Unidos”.

      I put myself in your shoes and I totally understand. I had a guy from Mali cooking meet across the street from my house day in and day put with no city permits or any sanitary elements like a few flies and dirt will boost our immune system. I have nothing against immigrants, I have friend from all over the world including my business parter who is from Latvia, but I think less they can do is to get their shit together.

        Me pongo en su lugar y lo entiendo
        Tuve un tipo de Mali cocinando enfrente de mi casa día y noche sin permisos de la municipalidad (ayuntamiento) ni medidas sanitarias y las moscas alrededor serian para revitalizar nuestros organismos. No tengo nada contra los inmigrantes, tengo amigos de todo el mundo viviendo aca, incluyendo a mi socio que es de Letonia, pero creo que lo menos que un extranjero debe hacer es seguir las leyes y lineas de conducta para adaptarse a nuestro pais.
