Pasig, el lago más grande de Filipinas, fluye aproximadamente 25 kilómetros (16 millas) desde la bahía de Manila hasta Lagun de Bay. El problema es que atraviesa la ciudad más poblada del planeta, Manila, y como resultado, se ha convertido en un vertedero local.
Después de la Segunda Guerra Mundial, cuando la población de la ciudad se disparó, el río se utilizó para verter desechos de fábricas, desechos domésticos, aguas residuales y casi cualquier cosa que puedas imaginar. En la década de 1990, Pasig se consideró biológicamente muerto, lo que significa que ya no podía albergar vida acuática debido a los bajos niveles de oxígeno.
Pero nuestra historia no termina aquí.
La imagen de la derecha es el río Pasig en la actualidad. Desde 2008, el Banco Asiático de Desarrollo y el gobierno filipino tomaron una iniciativa para rehabilitar el río. El programa requirió reunir a la gente de la ciudad, varias agencias gubernamentales y expertos ambientales.
Los propios filipinos se habían quedado sin agua, sin siquiera esperar ver el BAfD y, poco a poco, el río Muerto comenzó a cobrar vida. El año pasado, el río ganó el premio Asian River Award por su “belleza” y “utilidad”.
El río Pasig ganó el primer premio Asia Riverprise.

The study which stated that Pasig River is the most polluting river in the entire world can easily be falsified. I know Pasig river is not the cleanest but I can personally attest it is not the dirtiest nor the smelliest nor the worst polluter. Go around the globe and see for yourselves. Look at other larger rivers in China, India, South America and even in Indonesia. This study should have been contested for its claims. Nevertheless, I fully support any effort to maintain an ecological balance with people and nature.
