Tormentas apocalípticas en Estados Unidos

La presencia de un frente frío estacionario, sumada a inestabilidad atmosférica, fuertes precipitaciones y una ola de calor extremo que confluyen en la costa este de EE.UU., enciende las alarmas de las autoridades de ese país debido a la alta probabilidad de inundaciones y desastres en al menos cinco estados. De acuerdo con la prensa local y los pronósticos climáticos, los estados que se verán afectados por el impacto de la inestabilidad climática serán Virginia, Maryland, Nueva York y Pensilvania, además de Washington D.C. La situación ha prendido las alertas del Servicio Meteorológico Nacional, pues se teme que el temporal podría afectar a más de 85 millones de personas a lo largo del corredor de la Interestatal 95. Las autoridades del Aeropuerto Internacional John F. Kennedy, de Nueva York, y del Aeropuerto Nacional Ronald Reagan, de Washington, emitieron advertencias y anunciaron posibles retrasos en tierra. Además, el Centro de Predicción de Tormentas de la Oficina Nacional de Administración Oceánica y Atmosférica (NOAA) alertó de un riesgo de tormentas eléctricas severas, de nivel 2 sobre 5, desde el sur de Richmond, Virginia, hasta el norte de Nueva York.

Según las previsiones, al final de la tarde de este martes, luego de “un día sofocante” por el intenso calor —por encima de los 37 grados—, se podrían registrar fuertes tormentas eléctricas, “potencialmente severas”, en la ciudad de Nueva York, donde también se producirían “vientos intensos y lluvias torrenciales”. Esto incluye la posibilidad de que se formen tornados o caiga granizo. La situación es similar para las demás entidades que se encuentran bajo la zona de influencia del temporal, que también se ve afectada por la fuerte humedad causada por los remanentes de la depresión tropical Chantal. En algunas zonas, los picos de calor superarán los 38 grados. Por ello, se han emitido alertas sobre la calidad del aire y su “respirabilidad, especialmente para las poblaciones vulnerables”.

Con la presencia del frente frío y la caída de precipitaciones masivas, se podrían generar inundaciones repentinas y puntuales. Las lluvias se registrarían en horas de la noche de este martes. De acuerdo con los pronósticos reseñados por medios locales, la inestabilidad climática se mantendrá durante toda la semana. La situación genera especial alarma en EE.UU. tras las violentas inundaciones que el pasado fin de semana se registraron en Texas, que causaron la trágica muerte de más de 100 personas y dejaron miles de damnificados y afectados.
