Ella Fitzgerald fue encarcelada en 1955 por cantar ante un público integrado. Cuando el productor de jazz y promotor de conciertos estadounidense Norman Gran alquiló el Music Hall de Houston, incluyó una cláusula de no segregación. Quitó todos los carteles que designaban “blanco” o “negro” en los baños y se negó a vender entradas por adelantado para evitar la segregación.

Recuerda un incidente: “Una persona se me acercó temprano en la sala de conciertos y quería cambiar de asiento porque estaba sentado al lado de una persona negra. Le dije: ‘No, te devolveremos el dinero, pero no cambiaremos tu asiento’.  El cliente aceptó el reembolso. Hicimos todo lo posible para garantizar la integración”.

A pesar de que no hubo disturbios entre la multitud integrada, la policía apareció para arrestar a los artistas entre presentaciones. Arrestaron al grupo por juegos de azar porque algunos músicos de jazz estaban jugando a los dados, mientras Fitzgerald tomaba café. El grupo fue llevado a la comisaría, donde un oficial le pidió un autógrafo a Fitzgerald. Después de pagar una multa, fueron liberados y pudieron realizar su segundo set ante un público desprevenido.

En una entrevista de 1963, Fitzgerald habló de su frustración al lidiar con el racismo en el Sur: “Tal vez me estoy pasando de la raya, pero tengo que decirlo porque lo tengo en el corazón. Es desalentador que no podamos actuar en ciertas partes del Sur como lo hacemos en el extranjero, donde todo el mundo viene a disfrutar de la música sin prejuicios. Yo solía quedarme en silencio porque la gente decía: ‘La gente del mundo del espectáculo debería mantenerse al margen de la política’, pero nos ha avergonzado mucho. No entiendo por qué no tocamos en Alabama o por qué no podemos dar un concierto. La música es música”.
