FORD MUSTANG GT FASTBACK 1968, NOSTALGIA Y LEYENDA

.

I am glad they will put this beauty in an exhibition. 22,000 Mustangs were sold on the first day it was available. I believe this is a feat that hasn’t been replicated since. I am going to go out on a limb here and say it was an instant icon, with later movies and motor sports aside.

this ’69 Mustang Fastback was never owned by Mr. McQueen. That, unfortunately, slashes its potential earning figures, but you’re still left with a car that’s in great condition.

So cool. Two identical 1968 Ford Mustang GT fastbacks were used in the filming of the classic Warner Bros. movie “Bullitt” that debuted in theaters on Oct. 17, 1968. After filming, the original Ford Mustang movie cars went their separate ways: the hero vehicle driven by McQueen in the movie was sold by Warner Bros. to a private buyer, and the other – used in many of the jumps during the famous chase scene – was sent to a salvage yard. That jumper vehicle resurfaced in Baja, California, in early 2017, but the other was lost to history. Until now. Sean Kiernan, owner of the original Steve McQueen Ford Mustang hero vehicle, inherited the car in 2014 from his late father, Robert, who had purchased the original Bullitt Mustang in 1974. To fulfill his family’s lifelong dream, Sean contacted Ford and the two parties worked together to reveal his movie star Ford Mustang alongside the all-new 2019 Ford Mustang Bullitt at the 2018 North American International Auto Show in Detroit.
“You know, it was never our intention to keep this car a secret from everybody,” Sean said. “It just kind of happened with life. I’m just completely buzzing to join with Ford and the new Bullitt and show this car to the world on one of the biggest stages there is.”
“When making a Bullitt, there are certain things it absolutely must have,” said Carl Widmann, Mustang chief engineer. “It has to have the right attitude, it has to be unique in some way from a Mustang GT, and more than anything, it has to be bad ass.”
That reputation was born after a Ford Mustang GT fastback played a prominent role in the 1968 movie, and most notably in a chase scene that set new standards in filmmaking. The film’s nearly 10- minute-long sequence followed McQueen chasing down two hitmen in his Mustang through the streets of San Francisco.
“This new Bullitt is, as Steve McQueen was, effortlessly cool,” said Darrell Behmer, Mustang chief designer. “As a designer, it’s my favorite Mustang – devoid of stripes, spoilers and badges. It doesn’t need to scream about anything – it’s just cool.”

I still believe that scene saved more lives than any public service bulletin, us kids would always give each other a mean look when we buckled up, this was serious business and if you were driving a 60’s car it was !

Good point, I did not think about that but you are right, I am a Baby Boomer and when we wanted to “psychologically” impress someone, we would “buckle-up” just for the look of this movie. Peace be with you, Good comment,

What a car and what a movie. It was the pioneer of car chases. The car chase was out of sequence moving in seconds from one end of the city to another. Places they pass in the chase include Russian Hill, Bernal Heights, Marina Blvd near Crissy Fields, Potero Hill. John McLaren Park, and ends on Highway 1. It’s said that they wanted to perform the chase across the Golden Gate Bridge but couldn’t get permission. There are several interactive maps on the web showing the actual routes the chase followed.

I’d like to point out the 2019 Ford Mustang Bullitt is technically an homage to the 1968 Steve McQueen film “Bullitt,” and specifically the Mustang in that movie that participated in one of the most famous car chases in film history. Its green paint, 1960s-style black wheels, cue ball shifter and various Bullitt badging would be the tell-tale sign of this tie-in. However, the Mustang Bullitt is so much more than that. Even if you had no idea there was a movie, the Bullitt would be the coolest, best-driving and generally most appealing 2019 Mustang.
Besides its subtle and oh-so-cool appearance (Steve McQueen was really onto something with that look),

You youngsters don’t know cool if you don’t know McQueen! He basically went airborne in that Mustang over the streets of San Francisco and invented the exciting car chase single handed. But, back to the review…

¡Ustedes jóvenes no saben bien si no conocen a McQueen!

What about Kevin Costner hair in the Bodyguard?
Here it is:
In 1976, McQueen brought up the idea for a film involving a music star being protected by a bodyguard from a stalker. The film, initially seen as a vehicle for McQueen and Diana Ross, was shelved for nearly 20 years until it was finally made as The Bodyguard in 1992, starring Kevin Costner and Whitney Houston.
