Al menos 27 personas han sido hospitalizadas en West Baltimore tras sospechas de sobredosis de drogas.

Siete personas fueron ingresadas en estado crítico, pero no se han reportado víctimas mortales. El incidente tuvo lugar cerca de una intersección en la zona de Penn North de la ciudad el jueves por la mañana. Las autoridades no han revelado qué sustancias sospechan que pudieron haber estado involucradas.

Estados Unidos ha experimentado un rápido aumento en el número de sobredosis de drogas en las últimas dos décadas. Las muertes por sobredosis de drogas aumentaron un 500 % entre 1999 y 2022, según los Centros para el Control y la Prevención de Enfermedades (CDC). Durante este período, los CDC han identificado tres oleadas de causas predominantes: la primera relacionada con opioides recetados, la segunda con heroína y, más recientemente, con opioides sintéticos.

Cada vez más, las drogas ilegales se mezclan con drogas sintéticas, como el fentanilo, que aumentan el riesgo de sobredosis, o con sustancias tóxicas. El fiscal estatal de Baltimore, Ivan Bates, afirmó que el incidente sirvió como un “poderoso recordatorio” de la “batalla continua de la ciudad contra la epidemia de opioides”.

El jefe de bomberos, James Wallace, declaró a la prensa el jueves que los servicios de emergencia que acudieron al lugar del incidente en Baltimore fueron dirigidos a varias personas sospechosas de sobredosis. Añadió que se encontraron personas a lo largo de dos avenidas que se cruzan, así como en los andenes del metro y en callejones, tras la respuesta inicial alrededor de las 09:30 hora local (14:30 BST), según CBS.

La policía de Baltimore publicó en X el jueves que ellos, junto con los bomberos, se encontraban en la intersección de la calle “en referencia a varias personas que presentaban síntomas de sobredosis”. El servicio de policía pidió a la gente que evitara la zona, ya que varias calles habían sido bloqueadas y los autobuses desviados. El gobernador de Maryland, Wes Moore, también declaró el jueves que su equipo estaba coordinando con agencias estatales, funcionarios municipales y personal de primera respuesta.

“Agradezco a quienes nos alertaron rápidamente sobre esta situación y a quienes están brindando apoyo a la comunidad”, declaró Moore.

Por otra parte, el alcalde de la ciudad, Brandon Scott, ofreció consejos a los residentes que consumen drogas, como no consumir nunca solos y llevar consigo naloxona, que puede revertir o reducir los efectos de una sobredosis.
